25 Years of Wildlife Protection
We have campaigned against whaling and succeeded in keeping the current commercial ban in place. A ground breaking report on the bushmeat trade which inflicts great cruelty and threatens the existence of whole species was produced by WSPA in 1995. We also work to protect primates from all over the world and have set up sanctuaries in Sierra Leone, Spain and the Democratic Republic of Congo. WSPA launched Libearty, its world campaign for bears, in 1992 to stop the appalling catalogue of cruelty inflicted on one of the world’s best-loved animals. As a result, bear dancing has been banned in Greece and Turkey and sanctuaries have been set up in India, Pakistan, Thailand, Greece, Hungary, Turkey and Romania. Our efforts also exposed the cruelty of Japanese bear parks which affect more than 800 bears living in barren, inadequate environments where they are forced to fight and beg for food thrown by tourists. We have also mobilised public opinion against the barbaric practice of farming bears for their bile and body parts which occurs throughout Asia. The Vietnamese government is working with us to end bear farming for good in their own country and we will continue to fight against it in the rest of Asia.
