Farm Animals

Farm AnimalsBillions of animals in factory farms are living dismal, short lives.

WSPA is helping to raise awareness and introduce legislation that will protect farm animals and provide better conditions for a more dignified life.

Caged, confined and suffering

The varying conditions present in farming pose the world’s biggest animal welfare concern.

Factory farmed animals are caged or crammed together in conditions that allow no display of natural behaviour and in some cases no daylight.

The animals are forced to grow super-fast; pushed to their physical limits in the quest for more cheap meat, milk or eggs.

At the end of their brief lives, millions of animals are transported over great distances in terrible conditions, only to be slaughtered at the journey’s end.

A global call to action

Such a global problem requires a global solution. In countries all over the world, WSPA is working with other animal welfare organisations to help put an end to the suffering.

Your support has helped us with:

  • The ban of Foie Gras production in Israel, as well as legislation to protect veal calves.

  • Presenting the case for improved standards of animal welfare at an international conference hosted by the OIE (the office that sets animal health standards for international trade) in Paris.

WSPA’s key demands at the conference were that the OIE should take the lead in making sure that welfare is considered during emergency slaughter, and that contingency plans should be put in place globally.

  • The first ever animal welfare conference in Colombia, hosted by WSPA.

You can help make a difference in the following ways:

  • Spread the word about factory farming among your family and friends.

  • Write a polite letter to your national agriculture minister, local Member of Parliament or national representative calling for an end to all forms of factory farming. This method has been highly effective in the European Union (EU).

  • Eat better, safer and kinder by avoiding factory farmed meat, milk and eggs - see our ‘humane hints‘ below.

Humane hints

As citizens and consumers, we can all help bring an end to the cruelty of factory farming. The following humane hints will help you take action for animals:

  • Choose only free range or organic meat, milk and eggs. These are produced in farming systems where the animals can roam freely and behave more naturally.

  • Look out for labels such as ‘free range‘, ‘organic‘, or ‘outdoor reared‘. These labels mean that the animals were reared without cages and crates.

  • Beware of labelling terms such as ‘fresh‘, ‘farm fresh‘, ‘country fresh‘, or ‘farm assured‘. These labels mean nothing about animal welfare, and the products are often produced on a factory farm.

  • Urge your local store to stock more free range and organic produce. Congratulate those that already do.

  • Use customer comment cards, customer helplines, and other facilities to show that you care about farm animal welfare!
